Informative Essay

You can read it, but can you explain it?

Purpose

Body Paragraphs

Planning

The main purpose of an informative essay is to inform the reader about a topic, but it can have you provide this information in different ways.

Inform can also mean:

  • Describe
  • Explain
  • Define

*Elaborate* on your subtopics. Tell the reader what is important about this point.

  • Why is it relevant?
  • Why are you telling them this information?
  • How does it connect back to the main topic?

The body paragraphs should be the easiest thing to do because you are just explaining information from the text. Use your evidence as a "jumping" point.

Let's Practice!

  • You plan and write an informative essay similarly to the way you plan and write an argumentative essay. You need a thesis or "controlling idea," which is similar to a claim, but instead of arguing you must explain the topic and show understanding using the sources.

Thesis Statement (controlling idea)-

Subtopic 1 :

  • Evidence 1

Subtopic 2:

  • Evidence 2

Subtopic 3:

  • Evidence 3

  • Conclusion - Answer " So what? "
