Gender Concept Map

So what is gender?

Molly Green

Most people think that the words "gender" and "sex" are interchangeable definitions, but this isn't the case. As stated earlier, "sex" is someone's biological assignment. Gender is a compilation of things, including how a person expresses their sex and sexuality. Also, the sex that a person identifies with (Serano 25).

What is it to be male or female? Feminine or masculine?

Well first you have to start thinking of those questions as being independent of each other. To be male or to be female would be to have a penis and XY chromosomes or a vagina and XX chromosomes, respectively.

But to be feminine or masculine is how one represents themselves to the world, and what is culturally acknowledged as being feminine or masculine.

Sex:

Sex is defined as the physical representation of a person's gender. As in whether or not a person has female genitalia or male genitalia.

Sometimes though, infants can be born neither clearly male or clearly female, which is considered intersex (Kessler 12).

Trans/Cis

To be trans would be anyone who is described as being outside of the societal belief.

To be cis would be to be either male and presenting as masculine, or to be female and present as feminine.

However, someone's sexuality refers to their preferences when choosing a partner.

Taking into consideration people who don't identify with the bigender idea, or gender queer (Serano 25), trans can cover a wide variety of terms. There is transsexual, which would be an individual who lives as one of the opposite sex that they were given at birth (Serano 25). Some can be considered gender fluid, which is to say that they go back and forth between cis and trans, i.e. drag queens and drag kings.

There has been a lot of progress in recent history in terms of social acceptance and equality, but there is still a long way to go. Many people who find themselves outside of the bigender standards still face obstacles and discrimination, sometimes even violence, just because of how they live their lives.
