In the Elizabethan and early Jacobean era was when Shakespeare was writing his plays. Therefore we know that Curses and insults such as these were popular in around that time period.

Who?

  • Men and Women of varying ages and social backgrounds coud all use some of these Insults and curses
  • Women tended to use less crass curses, ususally swearing on things such as their:

-honour/chastity/virtue

-Saints

  • - tools of their trade (needle, thread, spinning wheel etc.)

  • People of lower class tended to be more informal and most likely cursed more
  • It was ill-advised to insult people of higher social standing or rank than you as there would be reprucussions

Why?

People in Elizabethan England probably used insults and curses for much of the same reasons we do today:

  • To make a point
  • To express strong emotions
  • To sound intelligent/sophisticated
