Commentary:
Lyndon B. Johnson throughout his speech, assured American's that everything would be fine, with JFK no longer in office. The way he does this is by creating confidence in self-reliance. This is an ethical appeal because people trust themselves. They have no knowledge of what others can and will do, so it makes ethical and logical sense to agree with LBJ, and rely on ourselves as Americans.
Lyndon B. Johnson gave his inaugural address in order to provide the with United States hope for the future, in spite of the dark time that had just happened in America.
"We have been allowed by Him to seek greatness with the sweat of our hands and the strength of our spirit." (P. 25, Line 4-5)
Commentary:
The word choice, such as "seek greatness", "sweat of our hands", "strength of spirit", are words that create a hopeful tone. American's needed the hope, during the chaotic time. These words are effective at creating hope and that is why Lyndon B. Johnson chose them.
Historical Context
Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in on "Air Force One" after John F. Kennedy was assassinated. He reassured Americans that everything that John F. Kennedy had promised for his term would still be carried out.
