Bar Code Reader and Flatbed Scanners

Flat bed Scanner

Examples

A flat bed scanner is a scanner which lays face up. It scans whatever is in the scanner and converts it into code which is then displayed onto a computer. There are different types of scanners like flatbed,CCD (Charge Coupled Device) and CIS scanners. Each one has a different way of scanning items.

Scanners and flatbed scanners are mainly used in work places where documents either have to be copied which uses a scanner to convert it to code and then a printer uses that code and prints a copy out. Or it can be used to scan hand written documents to be put onto a computer.

How it Works

Bar code readers use two parts to scan bar codes. They have a light source that shines onto the bar code and a photo diode which measures the intensity of the light reflected back, which generates a waveform used to measure the widths of the bars and the gaps in between. The computer then reads this and converts it into binary code

How it works

Here is a short video explaining how a flatbed scanner works

Examples

Bar code readers are usually used in scanning items. They are mainly used in shops because the bar code tells the computer how much the item costs and what item it is. However it can also be used to contain information like a web address.

Bar Code Reader

Bar code readers are devices that scan images of white and black lines in unique patterns called bar codes. There are four types of bar code readers that are used. These are Pen type readers, laser scanners , CCD readers and camera based readers.

Exam Question

Explain how a bar code a reader works and how a computer can use the information from a bar code.
