Man Vs. Man

Important lines

Extensive use of allusions in this scene, espcially when Hamlet goes off about how great his father was. Compared him to figures of power like Jove and Mercury.

Staging was also important. In this time period, the bedroom was the place used to recieving guests, but it also brings up the issue of the Freudian Oedipus complex

Use of the word "thou" when addresing his mother shows that Hamlet does not see them as equals. This separates him further from his mother in the mind of the reader.

"Let the birds fly, and like famous ape, to try to conclusions, in the basket creep and break your own neck down," (III.iv.195-97)

  • This is a thinnly veiled death threat
  • This shows the true conflict between Hamlet and his mother because even though the ghost has told Hamlet to spare her, he still is willing to kill her for her sins.
  • "A bloody deed- almost as bad, good Mother, As kill a king, and marry his brother." (III.iv.29-30)
  • Reveals that Hamlet believes his mother had something to do with father's death
  • When he says this he is cold and unemotional
  • doesn't care about his crimes only about revenge

Gertrude and Hamlet

  • Hamlet rages against his mother for her sins
  • He even threatens to murder her

Polonis and Hamlet

  • Hamlet stabs him, not knowing that it was Polonius, but is not upset when he finds out.
  • He believed it to be Claudius, which is confusing because Hamlet just left him in another chamber
  • "I took thee for thy better"
  • Hamlet says that his death is for the best because he is such a clumsy busybody
