Impacts of Human Intervention

- Humans use calcium most often as a tool to increase soil fertility

- Calcium is also important for humans when it comes to strengthening our bones. Milk contains a high amount of calcium which people drink to get it from.

Biological uses for Calcium

Calcium is used in many biological process. It relates to some such as:

- Soil Fertility

- The ability for chickens to produce eggshells

- Milk is a source of calcium for humans and animals

Important Terms

Calcium Carbonates: A colorless or white compound, CaCO3, occurring naturally as chalk, limestone, marble, and other forms.

Geology: Using the study of calcium, some simple chemical principles can be introduced such as the fact that calcium is intimately associated with carbon dioxide, as the solid calcium carbonate, and therefor included with life and life forms.

Cycles: The concept that all the materials on earth come from somewhere and must go somewhere.

Bio- mineralization: When organisms with shells die, their shells dissolve, or sink to the bottom and dissolve.

- Found in igneous rocks and calcium silicates.

- Also in sedimentary and metamorphic rocks as calcium carbonates.
