Why Sports?

Influences

There have been many people who have influenced my decision to become an educator and coach. These people include: my mother, junior high coaches, and my college softball coaches.

My mother is an elementary music teacher. She has been a teacher for over 20 years. Growing up around her classroom, I have seen first hand how her career can affect the lives of children. It amazes me how many of them remember her and come back to visit or have children in her classes.

My junior high coaches taught me many of the characteristics that I hope to teach to students of my own. The two main things I learned in junior high were how to treat coaches and teammates with respect, and how to be accountable for my actions.

My college softball coaches taught me how to connect with others. Whether it was on the field, during autograph sessions with fans, or out in the community, I have really learned how to communicate in different ways through my collegiate athletics experience.

I have grown up around sports my whole life. My dad has always told me that when I was born, they would lay me down in front of the TV and when the Texas Rangers pre-game show theme song came on, I would perk my head up and laugh. I absolutely love being active. My parents got me involved in sports at the age of 4 and ever since then, I have not stopped playing.

Being an athlete has taught me so many important characteristics. I have learned how to be responsible, accountable, dedicated, passionate, focused, and respectful.

"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are."

-John Wooden
