Introduction

What is meant by health and social care values?

Starter activity

Values are the concepts that ensure that health and social care is delivered in the best possible way. They help ensure that care improves life for the individuals, rather than making it worse. This is known as beneficence.

This unit will help you to find out about the values that underpin good health and social care practice.

Good practice in health and social care should always aim to empower individuals, enabling them to be involved in decisions and to do as much for themselves as possible.

We all prefer to be treated with respect, to feel safe and to have our needs considered, and we should all understand how distressing life can be if any of this does not happen.

Duty of care

When have you seen evidence of the values that underpin care?

Think about a visit to the dentist or the medical center. With the person to your right discuss how you would feel if your personal details were discussed in front of other patients.

List three reasons why this should not happen.

There is a legal requirement for all health and social care workers to provide a duty of care.

A duty of care ensures...

  • Completion of all tasks to the highest standard
  • Application to all areas of professional practice
  • All staff / learners on the premises have a responsibility for the safety of service users.
  • Adhering to the codes or practice and legislation.

Confidentiality

The rules of confidentiality are:

  • Not discussing one individual with another
  • Not sharing written information without permission
  • Secure storage of records, including those stored electronically.

Person centered approach to care delivery

A person centered approach is a way of delivering health and social care that places the individual at the center of the activity.

Rather than professionals deciding what is best for an individual, producing a plan and delivering the care, the individual is involved in every stage of the process.

Safeguarding

  • Taking care of own health and safety
  • Use security measures
  • DBS checks
  • Non-threatening verbal and non-verbal behavior
  • Safe storage of hazardous substances and medication
  • Use of correct containers for substances
  • Reporting hazards
  • Delivering care accurately

Respect for the individual

  • Do not discriminate against an individual
  • Do not judge individuals for what they may have done
  • Do not use words that may cause offense
  • Show an interest
  • Do not make fun of individuals

Dignity

Health and social care workers must protect the dignity of each individual by being aware of situations and actions that could cause embarrassment.
