Madrid would be a great place to host the Summer Olympics . The city is located in central Spain so it’s in a location that would include land and water close together. There are already huge amounts of olympic venues throughout the city, lessening the amount of venues needed to be built. The economy of Madrid is strong so they have the ability and the money to make the olympics successful in their city.

  • Madrid is found on the Meseta Plain, located in central Spain.
  • Madrid is located on 40 degrees North latitude and about 4 degrees West longitude.
  • The size of the city is about 605.8 square kilometers.
  • The city rests at about 2,100 feet above sea level, making it the most above sea level capital in Europe.

Madrid has thrived in the modern world because of its increasing economic status . Some factors that helped the city develop as a world class city are its location, productivity, and its export and import industry .

  • Madrid is the second largest industrial region in Spain after Barcelona.
  • It is the center of national government, finance, insurance and national transportation systems.
  • Madrid is the most important publishing center for Spanish language materials in the world.
  • The main agricultural products are wheat, vines, and olives. It is also one of the largest producers of olive oil
  • Madrid has an employment rate of 79 percent; the female population is 74.5 percent employed and males are 83.9 percent employed.
  • Madrid's currency is Euros.

  • Venues that will be used in the Madrid Olympics will be the same as those highlighted in the pre-existing venue plan for the 2000 Olympic bid from Spain.
  • The venues would be located mainly in the central and eastern areas of the city, including the ‘Campo de las Naciones’ zone that includes 14 competition venues.
  • Other main venue locations include the ‘Manzanares’ zone including 8 venues.
  • A total of 13 venues are outside of these 2 main zones, 7 of which are located within Madrid. The remaining 6 competition venues are football (soccer) stadiums throughout Spain, including Barcelona and Cordoba.

Introduction: When and Why?

Infrastructure Additions

The basic infrastructure of Madrid is very advanced and well equipped for its population's needs due to its well informed government and highly involved local servants.

  • With a major influx of people that the Olympics draws to an area, basic infrastructure needs are crucial to sustain a happy and productive olympic season.
  • Madrid has one of the best infrastructure systems of the world, to better prepare for the olympics the Madrid government would need to acquire high numbers of security, basic hotel, and a increase of emergent healthcare procedures (paramedics).
  • Due to the large crowds, security is needed to protect the citizens of Madrid as well as the athletes who have traveled to compete in the olympic games.
  • Basic hotel openings and businesses are also needed because with such high numbers of people moving in and out hotels to view specific parts of an olympic game, hotels need to be adequately stocked and ready to accommodate the large number of people.
  • Lastly, an increase of emergent healthcare procedures is needed to support possible injuries of Olympians and athletes, to give Madrid a good social view as a well equipped and capable host for the 2024 olympics.

Location and Status of Madrid

Map of Transportation Networks

Empresa Municipal de Transporte (EMT)

This public transportation system is highly praised for its easy travel, fast rides, and relatively low price. When coming to the Olympics tourists will be encouraged to use the metro system to travel throughout the city due to this mode of transportation helping with rush hour.

Metro

National Network of Spanish Railroads

Madrid Cercanias

  • Transportation:
  • Spain has one of the best train systems in Western Europe, known as the National Network of Spanish Railroads, with Madrid acting as the center point.
  • High-speed train lines reduce inter regional travel times by many hours.
  • The public transportation network in Madrid is “extensive, clean, and efficient” according to many reviews, the metro consists of 13 lines and there are over 170 bus lines
  • Madrid Cercanias is a regional rail system that links the southern and northern regions of the metropolitan area with trains running about every 10-15 minutes.
  • Madrid is surrounded by four circular roads that connect the city to other major cities in Spain.
  • Airports:
  • There are 150 total airports in Spain, 99 of which have paved runways.
  • Madrid’s Barajas International Airport has recently been expanded, being the busiest airport in Spain and only 13km from the center of the city.

Economic Development of Madrid

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

Existing Venues to Host Events

Pre-existing Venues and Additions

Two of the four clusters include:

Casa de Campo Cluster

  • Mountain Bike Circuit - Cycling (mountain bike)
  • Triathlon Circuit - Triathlon
  • Madrid Arena - Handball

Olympic Park Cluster

  • Olympic Stadium - all olympic athletics
  • Aquatic Centre - Aquatics (swimming, diving, water polo and synchronized swimming)
  • Gymnastics Pavilion - Gymnastics (artistic, rhythmic and trampoline)
  • Velodrome - Cycling (Track)
  • BMX Track - Cycling (BMX)

Proposed Venues:

  • Less individual venues and more venues that combine sports and activities. This will cut down on building costs and transportation.
  • Having less football stadiums (currently there are 5) and the construction of a large single stadium with multiple fields to serve as a hearth for the Olympic games in Madrid due to the common cultural popularity of football around the world.

Construction:

Since Madrid has many venues built for certain activities and sports, using those venues as the ones for the Olympics will save money, pollution and time. If for some reason a venue is needed to be built, using materials from already broken down buildings can be useful to build that extra venue.

Transportation:

Using environmentally friendly fuel, using hydro/ electric powered cars or buses to take visitors to their destination.

-For the duration of the Olympic games 8,000-10,000 bikes will be available to visitors to take from venue to venue, these bikes will have a scanning code, so we can keep track of all bikes.

Electricity:

-Using solar energy to power certain technology. Using LED lights as light source for venues, specifically at night, and using natural light in the day.

-Having 1-5 TV broadcast to different parts of the world (one for Asia, one for Europe etc.) Using 1-5 TV broadcasts that can be available to different channels in countries around the world, rather than having multiple channels broadcasting their own content which ends up using a lot of electricity.

Waste Management:

- Food vendors in the main venues will use compostable packaging made mainly from starch and cellulose-based bio-plastics. That means that properly disposed wrappers and boxes that hold the vendors’ foods won’t be sitting in a landfill 20 years from now.

Food:

-Madrid will be using locally grown organic fruits and vegetables to assure the people that the food the fruits and vegetables they eat aren't GMO's or raised with pests and chemicals and that they are all natural. The same goes for meat products. The beef, chicken, pork etc. that gets served to fans will be raised by animals that are eating its natural nutrients and are not being injected with growth hormones or antibiotics

Since our Olympic village is made with re-used and recyclable materials, we can break those buildings down or do a few things, for example, use those buildings to make items that can be useful for people living in poverty or even to house those that are living in poverty, recycle those materials and use that land for things such as crops, plants etc.
