Robbers Cave Experiment

By Amanda & Vivian

Data

  • During the first week, the boys became attached to their group, showing signs of hatred towards the other group.
  • During the "friction" phase, they both made the other group their enemy, verbally and physically harassing each other.
  • During the "integration" phase, boys became tolerant of each other, becoming friends.

CONCLUSION

  • Demonstrates the conflict between different groups in the world.
  • Proves the Realistic Conflict Theory.
  • Flaw: this experiment only used 12 year old white boys.

Stage Three: Integration

  • Boys participated in teamwork activities such as moving a boulder, etc.
  • This forced the boys to work together to complete tasks.

Stage One: In-Group Formation

  • Boys arrive and are split into two groups.
  • The "Eagles" and the "Rattlers"
  • Housed in separate cabins and did not know about the other groups existence for a whole week

Stage Two: Friction

  • Groups competed for prizes in tournaments such as tug-o-war, etc.
  • Continued activities until groups refused to eat together.

Main Hypothesis

  • Conflict occurs within two groups when they are competing for limited sources.

Realistic Conflict Theory

States that whenever there are two or more groups that are seeking the same limited resources, this will lead to conflict, negative stereotypes and beliefs, and discrimination between the groups.

The Experiment

  • Run by Muzafer Sherif in 1954 at Robbers Cave State Park, Oklahoma.
  • Involved 22, 12 year old Caucasian boys.
  • Lasted over 3 weeks.
  • Divided into three stages.
