Output Devices
Hardware devices that are used to communicate data with another computer system or a user.
There are a wide variety of different output devices available, we'll look at several now.
Printer
A device that will accept text and image output from a computer and produces that information on paper.
Speakers
This produces audio output from a computer system by converting an electronic signal into an analogue sound wave.
Force Feedback
Commonly seen in gamepads which will shake at certain times, e.g. when crashing a car.
A gamepad with force feedback is another multi-functional
device.
Actuator
Actuators are devices that turn energy (such as electricity) into motion.
For example a thermostat that detects changes in temperature
and turns on/off the
heating in response.
Screen
Outputs a visual image of the computers interface so that a user can interact with it.
Projector
Like a screen it outputs a visual image of the computers interface.
However it projects the image onto a wall or projector screen.
Robotic Arms
Robotic arms and other mechanical output devices are machinery that are controlled by a computer, usually through the use of CAM software.

A keyboard is used for typing in data much like you would with an old fashioned typewriter.
Mouse
A pointing device that allows you to input data into a computer by controlling a cursor to hover over and clicking on items.
Sensor
A sensor can detect changes in the physical environment and input this information into a computer system.
Touchscreen
Touchscreens allow a user to input data into a computer by directly touching the screen.
This is an example of a multi-functional devices as it does both
input & output.
Microphone
A device that is used to capture audio by converting the sound wave into an electronic signal.
Scanner
This device captures images from documents such as photos, magazines and reports.
Digital Camera
Similar to a traditional film based camera except the images are stored in a digital image format.
