The story is in the future in a isolated community. The houses are organized and tidy. The citizens of the community have a lot of rules that they must follow. Color is irrelevant since no one can see color.
A child named Jonas lives in a virtually perfect community in the future. Howeverm when he turns 12 his life changes for ever. Due to his new job, he realizes the flaws in the community. Jonas will change many lives in this awe inspiring book.
Jonas is a young boy at the age of 11, turning 12 and has blue eyes.
Big idea: Jonas is very questioning about things that every one else passes by. Jonas is also curios about the way things work in his community. Jonas begins to see colors and at the age of 12 is given the title as the Receiver of memory. His mentor is the Giver who gives him real memories and feelings.
Asher is a boy of 11 tuning 12. He has plain dark eyes unlike Jonas or the Giver.
Big Idea: Asher is very plain and dose not question his surroundings. He beleves that his community is perfect. Asher dose not feel true emotions like Jonas.
Dystopian:
The story takes place in the future in a community that claims to be perfect by controlling everyone in it. The community is flawed and no one sees it.

Big Idea: The Giver gives Jonas his memories, feelings, and colors.(pgs, 97-100) This helps Jonas realize that the community is flawed. The Giver helps Jonas escape and give feelings to the hole community making the community better. (pgs,155-166)

Evidence-
-Jonas realizes that love is more power full than fear and it is necessary to truly live and feel.
scene: The Giver is describing his love for a receiver years ago. He told Jonas that when he had to show the receiver, harsh sad things. The receiver could not stand it and was released of her own accord (pgs 140-143)
Theme- Sadness and fear are important in small amounts because if you must experience much pain, grief, and sadness at once it can break you.
-Jonas flips out when he learns more about feelings and the community and wants things to change while Asher is happy with the way things are.
Scene-Jonas is talking whith the Giver about choices and Jonas realizes that with out color there are no choices
