Florence's silhouette is outlined with yellow to symbolize the light she shone, not only on her patients during the night but on the nursing profession as a whole. It is also reflective of a nurses caring touch, as we bring light to others.
Next, I started laying out my collage pictures and
descriptive words I had chosen.
I wanted Florence's silhouette to be a reflection of strength, light and femininity so I decided to paint over the dark colors with lavender. In this project, lavender represents the soft, nurturing side of males and females alike.
The strength required to care for others with patience, empathy and compassion is reflected in the solid pallet
of her silhouette.
I chose a picture of cells as my background instead of the ocean-like painting. I wanted the collage to reflect the connection between cellular life, humanity, art and science.
At this point, my project was still evolving so there are differences in the final product.
Originally I wanted to use a background that reminded me of the ocean because it reminds me of the beginning of life. However, I changed my mind after
considering other options.
I selected pictures that reflect the art and science of nursing and the pursuit of excellence in practice.
The quote by Florence Nightingale reflects my view of discovery and of caring for people in
my nursing practice:
Once all my pictures and words were secured, I coated the entire canvas with Mod Podge to seal everything in and for just a touch of sheen.
I used nouns, adjectives and verbs to reflect the qualities I strive to achieve and which I believe nurses should represent to the public. These expressions are the foundation of joining the art and science of nursing into a meaningful, holistic, and professional practice.

I chose a DNA helix, books, a lamp that now symbolizes Florence Nightingale, laboratory test tubes, books, hands lifted up with a heart suspended and a cocoon and a butterfly picture to showcase the art and science of nursing.
Epilogue Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 chosen to reflect the popular classical music of the nineteenth century during the life of Florence Nightingale (1820 - 1910)
I began with a blank canvas, paint and brushes.
