Who is Charnine

Samy Charnine was born on May 28, 1967 in Nice, France. He immigrated here to the United States in 1983. He is know for his surreal paintings. His way of painting was impacted by Masters but his style and the way he portrays his art is pure Charnine. He is a very devoted artists and lives a very enclosed life.

Surrealism

Before you see his artwork you have to know a little bit about his style. Surealism began in the early 1920s, it wasn't only a visual art but it was also a written art. It was developed from the Dada movement of World War I and the most important center was Paris. The Dada movement was a "direct reaction to the slaughter, propaganda and inanity of World War I." It was started in Zurich Switzerland 1916 by many artists and poets alike. Surrealism advocated that ordinary expressions are important. The characterization of Surrealism happened when Surrealist began meeting in cafes and played drawing games as well as discussing Surrealism. Many artists contributed to this genre of art and that is how it became what we see today.

About His Art

Credit

When Samy migrated to the United States, he decided to live his life away from the world. Simply because he is very devoted to his art and doesn't wish to be disturbed when he is working. Not much is known about him currently due to this, however every painting that Samy does that he feels doesn't meet his standards or expectations, he destroys.

Samy uses recipes as well as techniques dating back to the Renaissance. He makes his own paint from historical pigments. In most of his pieces he incorporated fish, space, and water. His paintings are so precise and different from many other artists that paint in this style. He is known to destroy his own paintings, years of work, if it doesn't meet his own standards. In some of his paintings he kept the same background and only changed the focus of the image as you will see in one of the next slides.
