Learning Objective: You will research industrial design concepts and approaches.

Essential Question: Why should design get out of the way?

A Documentary about Industrial Design

Directed by Gary Hustwit

Tiered Assignment:

  • Complete the entire worksheet for as much as 90%.

Earn the final 10% by staying on task throughout the period.

To complete this assignment:

1. Pick up your Chromebook.

2. Go to Google Classrom open "00.07_Objectified Documentary Part 2".

3. Read the instructions carefully and answer all questions within.

Design: Lesson Seven

Do Now: Think back! We watched the first 6 minutes of Objectified on Friday. What did Alice Rawsthorn say was one of the first examples of mass production?

In the video, Dan Formosa says that we should "design for the extremes". What kinds of people represent the extremes?

Why should designers design for them?

The Basics:

1. One person addresses the class at a time

2. Genuine effort

Today’s Agenda:

Objectified Documentary - watch 2 parts and answer reflection questions

Watch carefully, answering the questions on the worksheet as you watch.

Quick Intro to 3D Printers

Printing Methods!

Laser Sintering - Powder

Fused Deposition Modeling - Filament

Basic Laptop Rules:

1. No headphones (unless watching a video).

2. Only use the laptop assigned to you.

3. Carry the laptop by the base (not the screen).

4. Follow the laptop retrieval and return protocols.

  • A plate is placed within a powder bath. A laser fuses specific parts of the powder that is on the plate.
  • The plate drops, a new layer of powder is spread over the fused cross-section and a new layer is fused atop the previous layer.
  • Professional, industrial uses only.

  • Filament is extruded through a nozzle onto a build surface one 2D layer (x & y axis) at a time.
  • Third dimension is added to the model by movement in the z direction by either the extruder nozzle or the build surface.
  • The filament can be made from a variety of materials.
  • Professional and consumer grade models.

Stereolithography - Liquid Resin

  • A resin is poured into the printer and a plate is placed on top of the resin bath.
  • An ultraviolet laser is directed into the bath and - one layer at a time - the model is built from the top down.
  • Excellent detail, high resolution levels.
  • Professional and consumer grade models available.
