EPIDEMIOLOGIC TRIANGLE: COMMON COLD

HOSPITAL

ENVIRONMENT

Definition:

-A hospitable environment is one where the germs have the best "home" to grow in. Outside factors effect this.

Factors:

-Temperature: rainy and cold weather

-People who have have the virus are considered contagious. If they sneeze, cough or blow their nose near you, you may be reseptive to getting it.

-You are also at risk if you touch your eyes, nose or mouth after touching an object infected with the virus. For example, a toy or a doorknob.

Preventative Care:

-It is important to be aware of the hospitable environment for this virus to ensure you are not creating a comfortable living place for the germs!

-Disinfect surfaces that are used and touched daily

-Dress warm/wear protective layers during cold and rainy seasons

-Wash your hands regularly

-Avoid touching nose, mouth, and eyes when hands are not clean. This is how the virus travels!

HOST SUSCEPTIBILITY

Definition:

-The prime candidate for the virus to make its "new home"

-Someone not in good health that the virus can take control over easily

-A place the virus can grow

Factors:

-The common cold does not care about age, race, ethnicity. Anyone can become infected. Even you and me!

-However, an optimal immune system is important to avoided becoming infected. Ensure a healthy balanced diet, adequate sleep, avoiding smoking and drinking.

AGENT INFECTIVITY

Process of a virus invading a cell

Factors:

- A virus: smallest known pathogen. About 1/500th size of bacteria

-A virus cannot carry out any life process on its own. To reproduce it must inject its own DNA into a host cell and force it to make copies of itself. Then seeks out other cells to invade.

-The virus breaches into the body by surpassing the immune system.

-Nutritional: when nutrition is not at its best, you may not be receiving all the vitamins living to be healthy

Definition:

-How does the virus infiltrate the body

-How is the germ received and reproduced

-What it consists of

-Type of Pathogen: biological make-up
