Jean Clouets' Contributions

Here are a few contributions Jean Clouet gave to the world. As a painter, his paintings were highly praised for their delicacy and force of characterization. One painting was "Guillaume Bude". This painting was mentioned in Budes manuscript notes, which are datable from 1536. Bude acted as a librarian to Francis I and was an ambassador.

  • Jean and his son dominated the production of portraiture in drawing and painting in 16th century France.
  • Jean was the son of either Jan Clouet or Michel Clouet, who is know to have painted the Valenciennces.
  • He painted 2 portraits of his son Francois Clouet.
  • His son Francois was more gifted than his father(Jean) and succeeded him as a chief court painter.

Jean Clouet was important because he was the court painter to King Frances I and was also mentioned in Guillaume Bude's manuscript notes. These notes are datable from about 1536. Clouet was known to have painted altar pieces at Tours, but it is believed they were destroyed in the religious struggle of the 16th century.
