Green Bean Plant Experiment

By: Britney Mayorga

Conclusion

My hypothesis was incorrect since the plant I watered with 10 ml didn't grow the highest. The plant with 5 ml grew the highest because plants don't need a lot of water to grow.

Analyzing Data

The chart shows the height of the plants in 3 different days. In the chart to find the height of the plants I found the average of the two plants I planted in each cup, remember I planted 2 plants in each cup. I found it by finding the height of the two plants, adding the two heights together, and then dividing the sum by 2. I found the average height of the plants of each cup. I used this data to do my graph.

As you can see, the bar graph shows the height of the plants. The lowest height is 0 cm on the 15 ml/day plant, and the highest height is the 5 ml/day plant with 4.7 cm. The height range is 0 cm to 4.7 cm.

To sum it all up, if you water your plant 5 ml a day it will grow the highest.

Procedures

Since 6 day had passed and the plant hadn't sprouted I decided to make do another trial and change some things

Label each cup one with 0 ml, another with 5 ml, another 10 ml, and the last one with 15 ml

Push the soil in each cup down so that the soil is not loose

Get seeds and put them in water this time for 2 hours

Take out as much water as you can from the cup of seeds

Put 140 ml of soil in each of the 4 cups

Get more soil, I got mine from my backyard

Procedures

Make sure your plants near a window in which sunlight comes into

Get 2 of the soaked green beans out of the cup and place them on the soil, then push them down about to where the middle of the soil is

Water your plants every day around the time you watered them the first time; I water mine at night around 7:40 p.m.

Immediately water them with the amount written on the cup and water trial 1 and trial 2 every day

Procedures

Get a green bean and put it in the cup then put another one and push them down deep enough so that you don't see it at the top or bottom

On the fifth day since I planted the plants of the second trial, I measured how high it was, and the next day, and the next day of a total of 3 measurements

Water the green beans immediately after you put them in the soil, 0ml cup none, 5ml cup 5ml, 10ml cup 10ml, and 15ml cup 15ml

Procedures

Get your 4 cups and label them 0 ml, 5 ml, 10 ml, and 15 ml with your marker

Fill each cup with 50 ml of soil

Get the fertilizer and mix it evenly with each cup of soil with a different spoon for each cup

Materials

  • 16 oz of soil
  • 4 plastic cups
  • 1 packet of green beans
  • fertilizer
  • water
  • marker
  • metric ruler
  • ml measuring tool

Variables

Independent variable: Amount of water

Dependent variable: Height of plant

Control variables: Amount of soil, amount of fertilizer, brand of soil, brand of fertilizer, type of water, brand of seeds, amount of sunlight

Experiment

Hypothesis

If my plant is watered 10 ml a day, then it will grow the highest.

Research/Observations

Green beans are also called string beans and they are either pole or bush. If you put them in full sun then your results will be better, but if they are in extreme heat of summer they wont grow, so keep them watered. You can also put them in the shade, but keeping them on full sun helps them not be too wet and get less likely affected by diseases. They lie moderately rich soil with a little acidic (sour) pH (measurement for acidic), such as 6.0 to 6.2. Green plants are legumes, plants used for feed, food, or as soil improving crop, so they can fix their own nitrogen with the help of the rhizobia bacteria, so they don't need a lot of fertilizer. They will rot in cold, damp soil, so you can use inoculation, keeps heat in, to warm the soil such as black plastic. When you plant the seeds, plant them 1-2 inches deep and water the soil immediately and also regularly until they sprout.

Question/Problem

How does water affect plants?
