At Celie's Easter dinner, she tells Albert that she is leaving with Shug to Tennessee. While telling him this, she also calls him out on Celie's letters and all of the awful things he put her through.
Sofia is asked by the mayor's wife to work for her. She uses profanity towards her offer, in which the mayor slaps Sofia across the mouth. Sofia lashes back, goes to jail, and ends up working for the mayor's wife anyway.
Celie's sister, Nettie, comes to stay with Celie and her husband Albert (Mr._). Albert has feelings for Nettie, but she refuses his forces. Albert chooses to throw her out of the house, leaving Celie with no way of communicating with her sister.
Nettie returns home to Celie's house, along with Celie's children, Adam and Olivia. Adam has married one of the Olinkans and Nettie has married the reverend.
While Celie was in Tennessee, her dad that raised her and molested her, that turns out to have been her stepfather, passes away, giving her his land that includes a shop and a big house. She starts a pants shop.
Shug returns, with a husband, on Easter. While Albert wonders off, Shug checks the mailbox and finds a letter from Nettie. Celie and Shug ransack the house and discover an abundant amount of letters that Nettie had written over the years. These letters were hidden by Albert.
Albert has strong feelings for Shug Avery, a well-known sultry singer. Shug Avery becomes very ill and Albert takes her into his home where Celie takes care of her. Shug and Celie develop a close bond and become involved with one another.
