As a result, approximately 300,000-500,000 people were killed (many had been asleep when the storm surge struck), making this storm the deadliest tropical cyclone of all time and one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent history.
Over $490 million (USD 2009) of damage occurred. Approximately 85% of homes in the area were destroyed or severely damaged, with the greatest destruction along the coast.
The storm surge devastated many of the offshore islands, wiping out villages and destroying crops throughout the region.
