Political Events 1850-1950

1880

1919

The First Boer War begins in South Africa between the Boers and the British

Iraqi Kurdish conflicts begin. The rebellion by the Kurds against the central government of Iraq would last and thousands would die until US intervention in 2003.

The First World War begins in Europe.

1886

The American Civil War begins. This war is fought between the Northern and Southern halves of America and was mainly circled around the legality of slavery.

1881

The Scramble for Africa begins. European superpowers like England, France and Germany start land grabbing and colonizing different African states, mainly to exploit resources.

Gold was discovered in Transvaal. People fled from all over the world to try to grab a share of the riches. This discovery would lead to the creation of Johannesburg, the capital of South Africa.

The United States officially abolishes slavery

The First World War ends. Many war reparations are imposed on Germany and the League of Nations is formed.

The Second Boer War begins in South Africa. The British won and formed the Union of South Africa.

The Herero Genocide begins. It is often thought of as the first genocide of the 20th century. The genocide was a racial extermination by German forces in what is known as modern day Namibia.

The Spanish Civil War begins. In many ways, the war reflected a deep division of the European powers and what was to come during WWII. Many brutal casualties were seen as well as new war technology was experimented with.

1945

1939

World War II ends with a victory for the Allied Powers. Approximately 6 million Jewish people, as well as homosexuals, cripples, gypsies and many other groups were massacred in death camps during the war.

World War II breaks out in Europe after Germany invades Poland.

1946

Students in Egypt begin anti-government protests. Many students were killed by police in the ensuing riots.

1948

Institutionalized Apartheid begins in South Africa
