Anima and Animus

  • the mirror image of our sex
  • the psyche of a woman contains masculine aspects (the animus) just as the psyche of a man contains feminine aspects (the anima)
  • Jung believed that when we became conscious of these figures within us, their energy could fortify and support our future aspirations

Theory of the Unconscious

The Shadow and the Self

Archetypes and Symbolism

The Shadow

  • similar to the ID in Freudian psychology
  • the shadow is the animalistic side of our personality
  • the source of both creative and destructive energies

The Self

Theory of Libido

  • provides a sense of unity in experience
  • Jung believed the ultimate goal of every individual was to reach a state of "selfhood" (similar to self-actualization
  • Jung believe the psyche was comprised of multiple parts and believed the unconsious had two layers, the personal and the collective
  • the ego represented the conscious mind, it contained the thoughts, memories and emotions that the individual is aware of
  • the ego in Jungian throry is mainly responsible for feelings of identity and continuity

Introversion and Extraversion

  • Archetypes: thoughts and images that have universal meanings across cultures
  • could potentially occur in dreams, literature, art or religion
  • Jung believed symbols from different cultures are often similar because they have come from archetypes shared by the entire human race
  • our ancestral past directs and influences our present behaviors

a central dimension of personality theories

Extraversion

  • characterized as outgoing, energetic, talkative etc

Introversion

  • characterized as reserved, solitary and reflective
  • Jung disagreed with Freud regarding the role of sexuality
  • he believed the libido was not only sexual energy, but a general psychic energy
  • the purpose of this energy was to spiritually, intellectually and creatively motivate the individual
  • for Jung the libido was also an individuals motivational pleasure/conflict reducing source (similar to Freud)

The Collective Unconscious

Carl Gustav Jung

  • the level of unconscious shared by each member of the human race
  • consisted of the latent memories of our ancestral and evolutionary past
  • Jung bleieved the mind has innate characteristics imprinted on it as a result of evolution
  • he called the ancestral memories and images "archetypes"
  • Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist who founded analytical psychology
  • was the first to distinguish two major attitudes or orientations of personality; introversion and extraversion
  • influenced by Freud, Joseph Campbell, Fredrich Nietzche and many other philosophers

The Personal Unconscious

  • first layer, essentially the same as Freud's version, contains temporarily forgotten information as well as repressed memories
  • contained complexes, a collection of throughts, feelings, attitudes and memories that focus on a single concept
  • more elements attached to the complex, the stronger the influence on the individual
  • Jung believed the personal unconscious was closer to the surface then Freuds unconscious
