Eastern Orthodox

  • In eastern orthodoxy, almost every part of life can be blessed.
  • Things such as trains, cars, machines, and even voyages.
  • There is symbolism in every part of the religion.
  • Details such as the color of the wine and even the way bread is cut for eucharist are all symbolic.

CATHOLICISM in a nutshell

  • 1 God: Holy Trinity - Father, Son, & Holy Spirit
  • believe in intercession: going before the priest to confess their sins
  • Worship and pray through various saints for certain aspects of life, sin and blessings
  • Abide by laws of the Scripture (the Holy Bible)
  • Belief in eternal life, after death, in Heaven or Hell

RITUALS

  • Storytelling
  • Creation Story - obtained from Genesis in the Bible
  • God created the Heavens and the Earth in 7 days
  • Day1: God created light and separated it from the darkness
  • Day 2: God separated the water (rain) from the water below (sea)
  • Day 3: God separated the water below (sea) from dry land
  • Day 4: God populated the sky with the sun, moon, and stars
  • Day 5: God populated the air with birds and the sea with fish
  • Day 6: God populated the land with animals and people (Adam & Eve)
  • Day 7: God celebrated; He blessed the day and rested on it
  • 1st Communion (also known as First Holy Communion or Holy Communion)
  • A person's first reception of the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, and in Roman Catholic churches occurs typically at age seven or eight
  • Occurs only after ones baptism and first confession (the Sacrament of Penance), the first two sacraments
  • Usually include:
  • large family gatherings
  • parties to celebrate the event
  • First communicant wears special clothing- clothing is all white to symbolize purity
  • Priest prays over the first communicant
  • First communicant accepts a piece of bread or cracker (to represent the body of Christ) and grape to represent the wine which symbolizes the blood shed from Christ
