What is RLS?
A neurological disorder characterized by
throbbing, pulling, creeping, or other unpleasant
sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable, and sometimes overwhelming urge to move them.
Causes?
-Genetics
-Low iron
-Parkinson's Disease
-Alcohol & Sleep deprivation
-Path of the basal ganglia
has been disrupted.
Symptoms
-uncomfortable sensations in legs
-followed by an irresistible urge to move that affected limb
-constantly moving the legs to relieve discomfort
-symptoms are usually worse at night with a distinct symptom-free period in the early morning
Long periods of inactivity, sleep deprivation,
relaxation exercises, and immobilization in
a cast may trigger RLS.
Treatment
-Moving affected limb
-Treating an associated medical condition
-Certain lifestyle changes and activities
-decreased use of caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco
-iron, folate, and magnesium supplements
-Medications (dopaminergic agents, opioids, anticonvulsants, benzodiazepines)
Diagnosis
-Worsen at night, symptom free in the morning
-Sensory symptoms triggered by relaxation/rest
& relieved with movement
-Strong, overwhelming urge to move the limb.
Prognosis
Lifelong condition.
Therapy & more sleep can minimize symptoms.
Worsen with age.
Some may have remissions.
