Who

William James Farrer 1806 to 1906 and was born in 3rd of April in Docker, Westmorland, England. He became a wheat breeder and grew up with his father Tomas Farrer. Then he moved to London and went to university and studied medicine. He won meddles and prizes and he was good at what he did. When he reached the age of 25 he moved to Australia. He made Australia a better place.

Why

William Farrer did this event because he lived on a farm and wanted to breed wheat to make money. But he heard about what was happening and found out this wheat from England wasn't surviving in Australia's hot weather the disease was called rust. He also heard about the cross breeding plants in America so that's what he did with his wheat. Since he studied medicine in England he tried to find a quire so the wheat didn't die in Australia. After some big decisions he started to try and find why was the wheat dying. It was a long hard journey but it was defiantly worth while he made the right choice! This made Australia a better place and more people from other countries were more eager to come to Australia.

What

When Australia was growing, food was special since their not many supplies. Back in the 1800's wheat was a special food. Since it made bread and other things that a baker might need. The wheat from England was a different failed to grow and it didn't like the Australian weather. So think about how many people wouldn't have jobs. It was the bakers since they couldn't make bread the farmers since they couldn't grow wheat and sailors who couldn't deliver it since the wheat would just die. William Farrer was extra special because in the whole world he was the only one who had a medicine so powerful it would stop the wheat crops from dying. This also meant Australia could come a bigger country. Without William Farrer Australia would be a different country today.

Where

When William Farrer lived in New South Wales he lived in a homestead with his wife Nina. He also had his laboratory which where all his experiments took place. It was near the Murrumbidgee River.

In 1882 the big experiment started. He started planning and getting his materials ready.
