Viewing Wigan's Work

How he works

  • Wigan has learned to control his breathing so that he works on his art between heartbeats.
  • In addition, he enters a "meditative state" to slow his heartbeat and reduce hand tremors.

Art Work

  • Wigan's art fits on the heads of pins or in the eye of a needle.
  • His medium is made up of dust specks, sand grains, spider's webs.
  • He sometimes uses the hair from a house fly as a paintbrush

How does his work contribute to our 3D design course?

About Willard Wigan

  • Because Wigan works at such a microscopic level, he explains that materials and the building of his creations work very differently on a microscopic scale--as a result, figuring out the structure of a piece is extremely important.
  • At any point, the entire thing can be blown away to nothing by a draft or breath; things he could not control. We came across similar problems while making multiples (specifically with the plaster). This problem also relates back to Anthony Goldsworthy, who uses nature as his art medium.

Why I chose him:

  • I used to make small houses/things/people out of clay--not as microscopic, though. I really liked Wigan's work because he challenges the limits of art.

• Born in Birmingham, England in 1957

• Began making miniature sculptures as early as the age of five, when he would make houses for ants
