What would happen if the sun suddenly disappeared?

VIDEO

1:02 - 6:49

A lot of horrible things can happen if the sun suddenly disappears, but for the first 8 minutes and 20 seconds no one will notice. The first thing that would happen when the sun disappears is that Earth, along with all the other planets, would go flying off into space, it would be a complete disaster. Within few days the world would face a lot of unusual stuff like...

Our solar system would be destroyed

The solar system would be out of order and after our 8 minutes and 20 seconds of no sun, we would see a little light above from Jupiter for 30 minutes total, and then see it disappear forever. We would never see are planets again unless we can find a way to travel at the speed of light.

Earth would get really cold

The average temperature on Earth, including cold and hot places, is about 15 degrees Celsius. A week later with no sun the temperature would be about 0 degrees Celsius. Humans and animals could survive for days or even months without the sun but about a year after the sun's disappearance, temperatures would drop to about -73 degrees Celsius. The best hope for survival would be to move to geothermal areas like Yellowstone or Iceland or an underground shelter heated by nuclear power.

Why is the sun important?

Nothing is more important to us on Earth than the Sun. Without the Sun's heat and light, the Earth would be a lifeless ball of ice. The Sun warms our seas, creates our weather patterns and gives energy to the plants that provide us with food and oxygen for life on Earth. One of the amazing things that the sun also provides for us with is Vitamin D which we need for our body.

Plants dying earlier

Photosynthesis would stop immediately after the sun's disappearance. Plants would make their own food for a while without sun but many plants would starve out quickly. Plants would still have oxygen because their is still plenty of oxygen left in the atmosphere to last us humans and other animals for thousands of years.
