Plate Tectonics: A Unifying Theory

lithosphere- The lithosphere is the rigid outer part of Earth made up of rocks in the crust attached to the upper part of mantle.

Continental Crust

Ocean Crust

core-The core is the central part of Earth.

mantle- The matle is a thick layer of solod and molten roclll that lies beneath the crust.

Vocabulary Words

Continental makes up Earth's land. This is made of relatively lightweight kind of rock called granite, which is thicker and less dense that Ocean Crust.

crust- The crust is a thin layer of solid rock that makes up the outermost part of Earth.

semimolten- Almost melted; used to describe mantle rocks below the lithosphere

Ocean Crust is the floor of the Ocean. Ocean Crust is mostly made out of basalt, which is a denser rock that granite. The thickniss of this is about 6 or 7 km.

seismic wave- A seismic wave is a vribation that travels through earth.

Vocabulary Words

Quick Check

How are S waves different from P waves?

The difference is that S waves are slower than P waves because they travel through solids while P waves travel through gases, liquids, and solids.

Critical Thinking: Quick Check

A model of Earth's interior would look like what would happen to earth if earthquakes or things that happen in the world.

Layers

Quick Check

From which layer of Earth do people get most of their resources?

How might Scientists are P waves and S waves to study Earth's interior?

Mantle

Have you ever wondered what Earth is made of? Scientists have learned a great deal about what lies beneath the continents and the ocean floor. W would a model of Earth's interior look like?

They help the scientists into knowing about the different layers in the Earth.

There are 3 main Layers : These layers have each a different composition, thickness, temperature, and density. Density is a measure of how much material there is in a given amount of space.

The crust because at the end it says that ''it is the layer on which people walk, build buildings, and grow crops.''

Because of the heat and pressure, molten rocks below the lithosphere are semimolten. These rocks can actually flow, bend, strech, and compress. They make up lithosphere.

Crust

Core

Mantle

Core is the central part of earth. It is found beneath the mantle is made of an outer, liquid part and an inner, solid part. It is made out of iron and nickels. These are metals that are denser than rock. Core is twice or almost twice as dense as the mantle is. This core is a sphere and the distance across is Earth center is about 6,900 km.

Mantle is a thick layer made out of solid that and molten rock that lies beneath the crust. When the mantle is made out of rock, some of it's rock in the layer can move. This happens because of the great pressure and high temperature.

Quick Check

Describe the 3 main layers.

Crust is a thin layer of solid rock that makes up the outermost of earth. The earth's crust is thin. An example for this would be an apple skin to being compared to the inside of the apple. Almost all the natural resources are found in this crust. But in earth's layer crust, is on which people walk, build buildings, and grow crops.

There are 3 main layers. The first one is crust, then mantle and at last core. The crust is the thin layer. The mantle is the rock that lies beneath the crust. The core is the Central part of Earth.
