Dead Poet's Society

www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnAyr0kWRGE

In this scene of Dead Poet's Society, Robin Williams is explaining to school boys the need for individuality. After performing an experiment to introduce the topic, he says, "We all have a great need for acceptance. But you must

trust that your beliefs are unique, your own. This quote mirrors transcendentalism in that it reflect the exact the belief of this tenet. Transcendentalism calls for individuality, rather than falling into the depths of conformity.

Stopping for a Visit- Barbara Latham

The painting Indian Woman and Child, by Homer Boss, portrays a woman caring for and feeding her child. This shows individuality because she is caring for her child with no additional help. The look on the woman's face reads solemnity, which shows that she is okay with being the only one to

In The Tale of Desperaux, a small mouse learns that he is different from the rest. Mice are supposed to run from the cats, but Desperaux thinks of the cats as friends. His parents are very worried about how he is "different" from the other mice, but Desperaux doesn't know why. When his parents are talking to the teacher mouse about Desperaux's behavior, the teacher proclaims, "Sometimes they just need to see the older ones do it." Desperaux does not like this idea; he continues to play with the cats and be his own individual. This represents transcendentalism because it shows how the mouse is different from all the other mice, and he wants to continue to be different.

raise her child. This painting shows transcendentalism because it depicts this woman as being a strong individual because she can raise a child on her own.

painting represents the nature tenet of transcendentalism because it is a simple nature scene promoting the unity of humanity and nature.

The song "Intuition", by Jewel is about finding intuition. Throughout the song, she continually tells the listener that by finding one's intuition, success will follow. This song represents transcendentalism because the theme of the song is all about this specific tenet. At one point, Jewel says, "your intuition is easy to find, just follow your heart." This shows that she believes finding one's intuition is key in life.

Cinderella Man

Individual, by Audioslave is a song about being yourself and staying true to one's real character. Throughout the entire song, they sing, "to be yourself is all that you can do" to tell the listener that life isn't about conforming to what others want; It is about being satisfied with one's

In the song "Intuition" by John Lennon, he talks about how he uses intuition to "play the game of life." Lennon relents how he does not understand others' superstition of his intuition, but he will continue to use it. This song represents this tenet of Transcendentalism because it talks about how intuition dominates his life. In the end of the song Lennon says, "Intuition takes me there, intuition takes me everywhere," which represents Lennon's belief that intuition is key.

The painting Mask, by Emil Bisttram shows a sad-looking face behind a black mask. When viewing this painting, one can assume the person behind the mask is on the outside looking in; that they've changed themselves

true self. This represents the transcendentalism tenet of being an individual.

In this movie clip from Cinderella Man, Jimmy, a poverty-stricken father who seems to have lost his kids asks a few close friends for money. Jimmy says, "You know me well enough to know if I had anybody else to go to, I wouldn't be here. If you could help me through this time I sure would be grateful." As he finishes pleading, a man stands up and says, "Sure Jimmy," and hands over a few bills. This action leads to everyone else getting up to hand Jimmy more money in order to help him out. This clip shows inherent goodness because even though everyone else is going through a hard time, they choose to help out their needy friend.

and conformed to fit in. This represents transcendentalism because it shows the opposite of what transcendentalists want; they do not want people to conform. Transcendentalists believe in 100% individualism.

Indian Brave is a painting from transcendentalist artist, James Spencer Russell. The title of this painting shows that the Native American has intuition, although it is not specified how. There are many things that could make this man brave- he could be a tribal leader, maybe he saved his village in a war, or he might have traveled long and far in order to find a new spot for a village. Whatever the reason may be, the audience can be assured he shows intuition.

Tears of the Sun

Nature, by Matisyahu is about finding one's inner being while in nature. Throughout the song, he continually sings about how "we are made from the freedom of nature." He proclaims that "at the end of my eighty I'll return to dirt." This song represents

Conformity versus Individualism

Anticonformity by Krystal Meyers

In the nature valley commercial, Erik Weihenmayer, a blind adventurer, speaks about how nature doesn't have to be seen, it can be felt. Erik says, "I believe nature is full of energy" and this shows the true power of nature. Even through a blind man's eyes, he can still feel the energy and beauty of the natural creations that surround him. This represents transcendentalism because the commercial shows the connection between Weihenmayer and nature.

transcendentalism because finding the inner being in nature is one of the main beliefs.

"Image is overrated if it washes off in the rain"

In Tears of the Sun, Lt. Waters, a Navy Seal, is discussing the decision of whether or not to bring 70 refugees to safety or not. Waters decides to go against the other party's orders and bring the refugees, "I can't out of good consciousness do that," he says. This shows the tenet because Waters refuses to leave behind people in need, even though it goes against the point of his mission.

Anticonformity, by Krystal Meyers, discusses how conforming to society is "stupid" because then "everyone is the same." Throughout the song, Meyers talks about how she is anticonformity and how she doesn't follow the typical trends. Meyers says, "you know you gotta go deeper to go against the grain." The point of this lyric is to appeal to the listener that although being your own individual is harder, it is better suited in the long run. The song shows this tenet of transcendentalism because the basis of the song is centered around not conforming as others do, and being yourself.
