Synthesis

At school every was greeting one another making our ways to our classrooms. Then one student said that the ocean was disappearing, but I didn't believe him since it was April Fools. I turned to gaze at the ocean and was shocked. water was draining from the ocean like water draining from a tub. The teachers allowed us to walk on the once ocean covered ocean floor. Not long after we all spot a huge wave coming; I went to the closest high ground as fast as possible and waited for it all to end. I saw many friends go under and swept out to the ocean. that's a day I can never forget.

Knowledge

This story is mainly about the tsunami on Laupahoehoe.

Comprehension

The town Laupahoehoe, or the leaf of lava, was a peaceful little town and a lot of people new each other. Until on April Fools the ocean was disappearing and three giant deadly waves struck the the Hawaiian peninsula. People ran for higher ground many drowned others were swept out to open water survivors on land had to watch friends and loved ones drift out to sea. Many other places suffered the tsunami's wrath like Hilo, which is twenty miles south of Laupahoehoe, and a japaneses neighborhood called Shinmachi. When it was over survivors started to clean; there were 159 dead throughout Hawaii some bodies were never found.

Analysis

What would you do if you were in the tsunami of April Fools?

  • 7:00AM Monday April 1, 1946 Children in the bus are going to school.

"The bus polled up in front of the school. As the children spilled out, they waved to each classmates walking down the slope toward the building." pg.5

After the tragedy, the people in Hawaii made a memorial for all the victims on April Fools. The people wondered how did the tsunami become so powerful and deadly. The Richter Scale said that the earthquake was 7.8. It was a big number, but there were more powerful ones already recorded at that time. Scientist first said that it was a landslide, but years later scientist discovered that no landslide occurred when the tsunami was created. Scientist are still looking for an answer.
