Symptoms

Demographics of D.I.D

What is DID?

DID patients are highly suggestible, their symptoms are at least partly iatrogenic— that is, prompted by their therapists' probing. Brain imaging studies, however, have corroborated identity transitions.

5% of patients in psychiactric wards have undiagnosed DID. Hospitalized and out-patients could have a even higher incidence.

For every one man diagnosed there are eight or nine women diagnosed.

Dissociative Identity Disorder is a disorder where a person's identity is split into two or more different personalities.

,

One can suffer from memory loss that is to much to be explained by ordinary forgetfulness.

Why DID??

Behavioral: self-destructive behavior, or self-harm

Mood: anxiety, feeling detached from self, or mood swings

Psychological: altered consciousness, depression, or flashback

Also common: amnesia or blackout

Each of these identities may have a unique name, personal history and characteristics, including obvious differences in voice, gender, mannerisms and even such physical qualities as the need for eyeglasses. There also are differences in how familiar each identity is with the others.

Did is a very serious disorder and even though it is not as common its still a problem that several people face.

Causes

People who suffer from DID

I didn't really learn about this until about 10 years ago," Walker tells CNN. "My life was out of control. I was not happy, I was very sad, I was angry and I didn't understand why."

Kim Noble

Severe extreme and repeated physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, especially during childhood.

Post-traumatic symptoms (nightmares, flashbacks, and startle responses) or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

People with this disorder may suffer from

  • Amnesia
  • Depersonalization
  • Derealization
  • Identity Disturbances

Disturbed and altered sleep has also been suggested as having a role in dissociative disorders in general and specifically in DID, alterations in environments also largely affecting the DID patient.

D.I.D in the Media

Can D.I.D be treated?

Kim has 20 main personalities, many fragments and 14 of the main personalities are artists. Having no formal art training, 14 of the main alters became interested in painting in 2004 after spending a short time with an art therapist. These 14 artists each have their own distinctive style, colours and themes, ranging from solitary deserts, sea scenes and abstracts to collages and paintings with traumatic content. Many alters are unaware that they share a body with other artists.

Walker said a competitive alter caused him to be a danger to himself, playing Russian roulette more than once. In the book he describes another incident, the very late delivery of a car, that made him so angry he had thoughts of killing someone. It was the moment he realized had to seek help, he said, which ultimately led to his diagnosis.

Patricia is the dominant personality among the many alter egos is Noble’s head. ‘I don’t like being called Kim,’ she says, ‘but I have got used to it.’

There's no cure for DID but it can be medically treated. Long term treatment can be the most successful. Treatments can include:

  • Talk therapy
  • Psychotherapy
  • Medications
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Adjunctive therapies
