The Algebra Behind Weather

Suppose the temperature at 6:00 AM is 20 degrees. I expect it to rise 3 degrees an hour for 3 hours, and then rise 2 degrees and hour until 4:00 PM, hold steady for 2 hours, and then drop 4 degrees the next hour. What is my temperature forecast for 7:00 PM? That is an algebra problem used by meteorologists every day!

The Calculus Behind Weather

A thunderstorm is really a 3-dimensional mass of cloud that moves through the atmosphere. One their jovs is to predict where the thunderstorm will be and what area under this storm will experience severe

weather. That is a calculus problem used hundreds of times per year.

The Basics

When we think about math in weather, we think about the complex things.

What about the simple things like variables?

  • T for temperature
  • P for pressure
  • greek letter theta for potential temperature
  • u and v for vector quantities
  • RH for relative humidity

All of these are basic variables used all throughout the meteorology fields and in multiple equations I found when researching.

Meteorologists also use all types of math, not just the basics. Basic computations, algebra, statistics, geometry, and calculus are all used by meteorologists.

What I plan to do....

Focus on the calculus aspect of weather.

The 7 Equations: Basis of Weather Prediction

Eulers Equations for Fluid Motion

  • Wind movement of air parcels
  • Rate of chang in volume
  • Effects of heat and moisture

Hydrostatic equation

  • how pressure varies with height
  • boyles law: at a constant tempurature, the volume of gas is diminished in the same ratio

Wind equations

Density equation

Why is this interesting to me?

Personal Experiences

Childhood memories

  • thunderstorms
  • tornadoes
  • severe weather

Interesting to think about

  • how everything works together

Meteorology for Dummies

1. What the heck is Meteorology?

  • Origin of the word: Greek word Meteoron meaning

any phenomenon in the sky

  • THE WEATHER!
  • This is thunderstorms, cyclones, fronts, hurricanes, typhoons, etc.
  • Oh, and everything in between such as: rain, temperature, cloud cover, wind, humidity, etc.

2. Why should I care about it?

  • help you plan what youre going to wear
  • if you should have your plans indoors or outdoors
  • when you should grab an umbrella
  • when to take shelter during a severe storm
