Relationship of society changes and hypokinetic disease

In today's modern society, health problems brought about by lack of exercise have increased. This can be accounted for, to some extent by the change from jobs needing physical effort to more sedentary occupations (e.g. office jobs).

In the US, 40% of the population gets no physical activity during their day. We can see that it is a large part of the population because the Obesity epidemic has been rising every year.

Over the years, we have become more and more lazy as a society and technology is helping us with that. Things as simple as a garage door opener; rather than getting out of our car to open the garage door, we push a button.

Fast food is on every corner making the choice easy when we’ve worked all day long and need some fast fuel to keep us going. All these things have slowly cut out the calories that we burn in an average day, causing a decrease in activity across the nation.

This is where we start to see Hypokinetic diseases showing up in life.

So what can we do?

Prevention from hypokinetic disease is simple. Change your lifestyle! Change the way you eat! And be active!

Simplify.

Start slow and make changes to your eating habits over time.

Every change you make to improve your diet matters. You don’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to completely eliminate foods you enjoy to have a healthy diet. The long term goal is to feel good, have more energy, and reduce the risk of cancer and disease.

Think "Fit and Healthy"

Try to make little changes to your everyday lifestyle

Try to work out at least once a week.

Strengthen your body through easy workouts.

Try yoga or Pilates or Recreational activities

Have fun and work out to keep yourself healthy!! :)

Origin of the word:

Hypertension

Hypo = "Under or lack of"

Kinetic = "relating to or resulting from motion"

Hypokinetic = lack of motion!

High blood pressure (hypertension) is when your blood pressure is 140/90 mmHg or above most of the time,

Force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease.

Key Terms:

Stroke

Type 2 Diabetes

A stroke happens when blood flow to a part of the brain stops. A stroke is sometimes called a "brain attack." If blood flow is stopped for longer than a few seconds, the brain cannot get blood and oxygen. Brain cells can die, causing permanent damage.

Type 2 diabetes, once called non-insulin-dependent diabetes, it is the most common form of diabetes.

A chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), your body's important source of fuel.

Habitual physical activity: Those requiring any movement by the large muscle groups of the musculoskeletal system. Examples include walking, running, cycling and any employment - related pursuit that demands similar muscular output.

Exercise: a subcategory of leisure time physical activity in which planned structured and repetitive bodily movements are performed to improve of maintain one or more components of physical fitness

Physical Fitness:

a general state of health and well-being or specifically the ability to perform aspects of sports or occupations. Physical fitness is generally achieved through correct nutrition, exercise, hygiene and rest.

Sport: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

What is Hypokinetic Disease?

HYPOKINETIC DISEASE

James Makres

IB SEHS TOPIC C.1

A disease associated with a sedentary or inactive lifestyle.

Caridovascular Disease

Coronary Heart Disease

Cardiovascular disease includes a number of conditions affecting the structures or function of the heart. Conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke.

Examples of Hypokinetic Diseases:

* Cardiovascular Disease

*Obesity

*Osteoporosis

*Coronary Heart Disease

*Hypertension

*Type 2 Diabetes

*Stroke

Obesity

Coronary artery disease develops when your coronary arteries — the major blood vessels that supply your heart with blood, oxygen and nutrients — become damaged or diseased. Cholesterol-containing deposits (plaque) in your arteries and inflammation are usually to blame for coronary artery disease.

Osteoporosis

Obesity is a complex disorder involving an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity isn't just a cosmetic concern. It increases your risk of diseases and health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Today, nationwide, roughly two out of three U.S. adults are overweight (69 percent) and one out of three is obese (36 percent)

Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to fracture. Usually the bone loses density, which measures the amount of calcium and minerals in the bone.

How is Physical activity linked with Hypokinetic disease?

Hypokinetic diseases are the result from a sedentary lifestyle. People who participate in a healthy and active lifestyle lower their risks of diagnosis. In addition to physical activity, reducing/not smoking & drinking can lower the chances of a diagnosis.

EXAMPLE

Physical activity No Vigorous Exercise Vigorous Exercise

No. of deaths 235 33

No. of men 2,814 777

Deaths per 1000 men 8.4 4.2

Relative risk 1.0 .5

Epidemiology

A branch of science that studies the frequency, distribution and cause of disease in human population.
