Hooray!

Reader Response theory means exactly what its title says. It is simple how a reader responds to a certain text. It is how and individual interprets what they are reading. Personality plays an important role in this theory because depending on their personality, they may see meanings in a text differently than what other people may see it as.

In a formal way of interpreting a novel, you

would simply understand it as directly as what

the book says. Reader Response theory allows

us to look at a text and see it differently than

how the direct meaning is supposed to be. You

may look at a book and instead of the scary

creature being the bad guy like the literal

meaning says, you may see the creature as the

hero. This only works though if you can

back it up with evidence in the text.

How the Theory Applies

Reader Response Theory History

Response response theory can be found everywhere in the Taming of the Shrew from the beginning till the end. Is Kate's speech what she truly feels, or is it what she just trying to tell her husband what he wants to hear? One or the other, or a little bit of both?

This new literary theory came has been around for some time, but did not really become popularly used until the 1960's in the countries of Germany and America. Early scholars that helped make this theory come alive were Stanley Fish, David Bleich, and Wolfgang Iser. An early use of this theory has been recorded in 1929 when a professor was reviewing his students papers and noticed how they said it was wrong for a professor to put his own meanings of text into what they study.
