STORIES THAT ARE ENRICHED BY DATA
These are the traditional news stories in which relevant data is used to verify the underlying reporting.
-- >> STORIES THAT USE DATA TO INVESTIGATE
Surfaces a story hidden in the data.
-- >> STORIES THAT EXPLAIN DATA
Reducing the complexity of data and providing meaning to readers.
“So there’s period of maybe like a couple of years ago, or probably longer where data dumps were really popular, so you will have this huge dataset and you put it Online, you have this big splash visual with a thousand bubbles or something, and you have like 16 filters and like 12 drop downs, and you can get so into that data, and everyone’s like “ah cool, that’s so much fun!”.
And then we just see that readers just don’t use that and they don’t want to spend half an hour digging into data, if there’s something interesting in that data, just show it to them. […] So that’s the change that we’ve seen here. And we’re trying to encourage everybody to do, is FOCUS ON THE STORY FIRST."

We should ensure that our stories are not merely about numbers, but people. (...) A good story should do two things: tell us why we should care, and tell us why it matters.
Data helps us to establish why a story matters: it connects one person’s story to 100 others like it; without data, a bad experience is merely an anecdote. But without a human story, data becomes just another statistic.
Exploratório X Explicativo
Principle 7. We should strive to keep the significant interesting and relevant by seeking to find and tell the human story that the data shines a spotlight on
It should also be noted that using data to elucidate the facts does not always help the reader connect with the content on a visceral level. Showing a statistic or number may not be the key to helping a reader fully understand and appreciate the story .
As one of our interviewees noted, “Journalistic work still remains the same: the journalists must still go out to interact with people, to detect the story behind the story. Data alone cannot be used to tell stories about individuals; the emotional story can only be found when journalists go out into the community.”

In other words, data journalism can often seem abstract and removed from your personal life. Bringing it closer, the ‘near’ view, is what makes it real and concrete. It’s the difference between flying over a place and remarking how the cars look like toys and being there on the road in the back seat of a taxi. One is remote and removed, the other is happening to you.
Data as the begginning of a conversation and not the end. Because data alone will never give us a solution
Giorgia Lupi
If data journalism is about anything, it’s the flexibility to search for new ways of storytelling.
A narrativa está a
serviço dos dados.
Nunca o contrário.
Working with data means designing ways to transform the abstract and the uncountable into something that can be seem, felt and directedly reconnected to our lives and our behaviours. something that is hard to achieve if you let the obsessions for the numbers and tecnology that surround them leads us in the process.
Storytelling can’t come before data, facts, evidence. The reporting, the research, the data analysis shapes the story.
The drama of the characters becomes so fascinating that we fail to make the connection with the larger points of our stories, and the story becomes a collection of voices, no tie to an overarching structure.
