Patient care aspects:
1. There is a need to have a system which can detect early stage non-cavitated caries.
2. The detection of early caries is important since it can be managed effectively through clinical preventive treatment.
3.Controlling the caries process prior to restoration will break the restorative cycles of restoration and improve patient care.
A new code for initial caries, E was introduced in this system in which it represents the combination of ICDAS caries code 1, 2 and 3
The criteria for code E were;
a) There is a clear carious opacity (white spot lesion) and/or brown carious discoloration at enamel surface
b) Localized enamel breakdown due to caries with no visible dentin
c) Presence of deep and/or complex pattern(s) of pits and fissures
