By the time Kublai Khan died in 1227, he controlled almost 1/3 of Asia. His empire stretched from Pacific Ocean to the Caspian Sea. His personal empire was more than 2 times bigger than the Greek Empire of Alexander the Great.

The Mongol Empire existed during the 13th and 14th centuries and was the largest contiguous land empire in history. The Mongols were known as fierce horsemen and warriors, the Mongol clans were united in 1206 by the powerful chief Temujin, later known as Genghis Khan.

Marco Polo changed the world by writing a book about his travels from Venice to China. He inspired other adventurers, such as the explorer Christopher Columbus, who always carried a copy of Polo's book. Maps he brought back helped to develop European cartography, and he introduced Europe to Chinese innovations such as paper money, coal, eyeglasses and a postal service.
