Objectivity

Opening the show there will be grabbing music that listeners immediately know that it is the news. This is followed by the name of the presenter. The headline is usually short yet dramatic to draw the audience attention in.

Sometimes the presenter will use a question, which you will then notice that they answer later during the show.

They will also use interviews with the public and correspondents (reporters).

Objectivity is when you are not opinionated this is to let the audience form their own opinion on the topic you are talking about. This makes your show balanced and non-bias meaning it will be impartial as well.

Subjectivity

In addition you have to take subjectivity into account. Subjectivity is closely linked to objectivity however subjectivity is a view that shows all angles. The purpose of this is to ensure that all information of the story is covered.

Balance & Bias

Radio Codes & Conventions

As well as subjectivity and objectivity you have to make sure your show is not bias but balanced. This means that you must show each side of the argument in equal amounts and not favour one side. It must not be bias because you want the listeners to form their own view on the matter. This also means that you have to balance out the type of news. For example you do not want too much 'heavy news' (such as murders) and you want to finish your broadcast on a positive story.

In radio there are specific ideas that you need to follow to make sure the audience can create their own opinion on the topic you are talking about. News broadcast should inform the listeners of what is going on in the world.

Impartiality

Accuracy

Impartiality is the opposite to bias and means that you don't show your opinion on a subject.

This is important because it affects the way the audience are addressed and they are entitled to form their own opinion on the specific topic.

Accuracy is important when producing a factual/news podcast, this means that everything has to be true and that you cannot just make information up. This is so the audience are not fed false information.

Privacy

Even though it is news you have to maintain the privacy of the person in false light as well as making sure their argument is balanced, to give the listeners a chance to form their own opinion.

Pace

The pace of what you are saying is important. Some stories may need more time than others but you do not want to make one story too long. Also you do not want to rush what you are saying. Getting the right pace for each bulletin is important.
