Third Appearance

Text Evidence

"Away from him, though the woods come alive with animal sounds. Reassured by his periodic whistles, I allow myself to drift farther away, and soon have two rabbits and a fat squirrel to show for it." (Collins 316)

Analysis

The quote shows obvisouly how the woods can represent life and hope. For example once Katniss caught the rabbits and squirrel they were able to live and keep alive. Not only this but it also gave them hope to keep going forward into the hunger games.

Analysis

Text Evidence

These quotes help to show that the woods don't only symbolize freedom, but also survival and life. When Katniss would climb the trees they created almost like a safe house for her because the careers couldn't climb trees to kill her. So basically the trees kept her alive in the games.

"Peeta has me by the arm, pushing me toward the tree."Climb. He'll be here in a second. We'll stand a better chance fighting him from above." (Collins 318)

Text Evidence

" I pick high tree to climb. If running hurt, climbing is agonizing because it not only only exertion but direct contact of my hands on the tree bark." (Collins 181)

The Woods in the Hunger Games

First Appearance

Analysis

Based on these quotes the woods can help to symbolize freedom and hope in The Hunger Games. For example Katniss always like to think of the woods when she is lost or hurt. This is the place where she can be free and not worry about anything . Also she likes the sights and the feelings they help to calm her down and not to think, but relax.

Text Evidence

"Everything would be perfect if this really was a holiday, if all the day off meant roaming the mountains with Gale, hunting for tonight's supper" (Collins 9)

"From this place, we are invisible but have a clear view of the valley. Which is teeming with life, greens to gather, roots to dig, fish iridescent in the sunlight." (Collins 9)

"Run off live in the woods..."(Collins 9)

Analysis

Even though the woods may not symbolize death it does symbolize frustration. Peeta had a hard time trying to figure out how he killed the girl Foxface. And in the end it was the wild berries (Nightlocks) that ended up killing Foxface.
