Origins

Language status

The Giraavaru origins are most probably in fishermen from the Malabar Coast of the Subcontinent that settled the Maldives in very ancient times. They are mentioned in the legend about the establishment of the capital and kingly rule in Male’, where the Giraavaru people granted permission to a visiting king Koimala Kalo prior to the foundation of his kingdom on Male’.

Ordinary Maldivians were required to address the Male' nobilty in a different level of speech. It was said that Giraavaru people were mortally scared of frogs, so people that disliked them woulod throw frogs at them, just becasue they thought they were a inferior race.

Weather Conditions

March is the hottest month in Maldives with an average temperature of 29°C and the coldest is January at 27°C with the most daily sunshine hours at 10 in February. The wettest month is September with an average of 243millimetres of rain. The best month to swim in the sea is in April when the average sea temperature is 30°C.

Introduction

Attire

Maldives has many tribes, and the Giraavaru tribe is one of them. In this presentation, we will tell u more about their culture, food, attire etc.We hope that you enjoy our presentation and will take some time to explore the wonderful world of the Giraavaru tribe.

The female tied their hair in buns on the left side. They wore unusual jewellery such as necklaces of tiny blue beads,as well as silver bangles on both wrists. The men wore a long sleeved shirt together with a long skirt from their waist to toes.

Political system

The Giraavaru people were a community headed always by women. It was the only island in the Maldives where the sultan’s civil authority was deputised always to a woman.

The sultans of the Maldives seemed to recognise the autonomy of the Giraavaru people and did not apply quite the same laws on them as they did on the rest of their realm. The Giraavaru people never seemed to fully recognise the sovereignty of the sultans.

Social differences

Giraavaru tribe

The most celebrated difference was that while the rest of the Maldive islanders were polygamous according to Islamic customs, and boasted the highest divorce rate in the world, the Giraavaru people were strictly monogamous and did not permit divorce.

The Giraavaru dialect was very unusual for a community that lived only a few kilometres from Male’. They had a slightly different vocabulary and some consonants were different from standard Maldive language.
