The Trial
1919 World Series
On September 28, 1920,
the eight players were
charged with conspiracy to
commit fraud. Though the
players did get off clean,
the new baseball
Commissioner banned
them from playing baseball
again.
Cincinnati vs Chicago
The 1919 World Series pit the
American League champion
Chicago White Sox against
the National League champion
Cincinnati Reds. The 1919 World
Series was a best-of-nine
format whereas most series
were a best-of-seven.

The Fix
Arnold Rothstein, a well-known mob boss and gambler, is
credited for the rig of the 1919 World Series, even
though he was never convicted for it. In November 1928,
he was gunned down in a poker game for refusing to pay
his loss.
Eight of the players for
White Sox were accused of
intentionally throwing the World
Series. It was later found out that
the players were gambling and
lost the game to earn some
extra money.
