A map is a drawing of a part of the Earths surface as it would be viewed from above.
A map will also have a compass rose or a North pointer (arrow) that helps a reader understand direction. A rose will always have North, South, East and West on it.
A good map has 5 essential features that help us understand what is being shown on the map.
We remember these features with the acronym BOLTS.
It stands for: Border, Orientation, Legend, Title and Scale
The title of the map names the area that is shown on the map.
A good map always has a border.
The border is used to show the edges of a map.
This shows where the map finishes, and may possibly join another map. It is usually a thick black line that forms a square or rectangle around what is being shown on the map.
We can't draw parts of their earth to their actual size; it wouldn't fit on the page! Instead, we use a scale to enable us to decrease the size accurately.
There are 3 types of scale that can be used on a map, but each does the same job! A map scale indicates the distance between two points in real life!
