Prophet and Messengers in Islam

Prophet Salih {saleh} (A.S)

What was his message?

How is he different or similar to other prophets?

What were the miracles bestowed on them?

What nation did he lead and who was his progency?

Prophet Saleh lived in the region of Al-Hajr, which was located along the trade route from southern Arabia to Syria. Allah sent Prophet Salih (PBUH), His name was Salih Ibn Ubeid, Ibn Maseh, Ibn Ubeid, Ibn Hader, Ibn Thamud, Ibn Ather, Ibn Eram, Ibn Noah. Prophet Saleh was a well respected citizen and came from a good family.

Prophet Salih came with the same message the other Prophets always came with.

He said: “O my people! Worship Allah! You have no other AIlah (God) but Him. (La ilaha ill-Allah: none has the right to be worshipped but Allah).” (7:73)

Saleh was sent to an Arab tribe called Thamud, who were related to and successors of another Arab tribe known as ‘Ad. The Thamud were also reported to be descendants of the Prophet Nuh (Noah). They were vain people who took great pride in their fertile farmland and grand architecture.

Saleh was called to preach a message to the people of Thamud. Saleh's message was very simple: He told his people to turn away from the bad behavior and to turn, instead, to the One God, Allah,Prophet Saleh tried to call his people to the worship of One God, to Whom they should give thanks for all their bounties. He called upon the rich to stop oppressing the poor, and for an end to all mischief and evil. The people of Thamud were very stubborn in their ways, and refused to accept the message which Saleh was bringing to them.

While some people accepted Saleh, others demanded that he perform a miracle in order to prove his Prophethood. They challenged him to produce for them a camel out of the nearby rocks. Saleh prayed and the miracle took place by Allah’s permission. By the grace of God, an enormous, ten month pregnant she camel emerged from the rocks at the bottom of the mountain. Some of the people understood the magnitude of this miracle but the majority continued to disbelieve.

Like every other Prophet, Prophet Saleh (A.S) was also a gentle and humble person. All the Prophets (pbut) were Great Humans. They were the Best of Mankind. However how the message was conveyed is the difference between the prophets.

Saleh was a pious, righteous man who held a position of leadership in the community, but his call to worship God alone infuriated many people. Some understood the wisdom of his words, but the majority of the people disbelieved and harmed Saleh with both words and actions.

What was his role?

What revelation did he come with?

In what year was he born and how did he die?

What qualities did he possess for him to be chosen by Allah SWT for him to be a Prophet?

How has Prophet Saleh (A.S) inspired you and your daily life as Muslim?

God said in Quran that Prophets and Messengers were sent to every nation on earth and that they all spread the same message – to worship One God, alone, without partners, sons, or daughters. Likewise with Prophet Saleh (A.S), Allah sent him to the people of Thamud so that he could call people towards Islam.

The exact time period when Prophet Saleh preached is unknown. It is believed that he came approximately 200 years after Prophet Hud.

The story of Saleh teaches us an important fact about ourselves. We agree with God when things are going good for us, but then we go back on what we have promised to Him, turning back to our previous ways.It teaches us, also, not to disobey God, but to listen to His Prophets and messengers and be prompt to do what they say.

  • Prophet Saleh (A.S) was totally obedient to Allah.
  • He was patient.
  • Honest and humble
  • Courage
  • Respect

Salih was known for his wisdom, purity and goodness and had been greatly respected by his people before Allah's revelation came to him. To prove that he was a messenger of Allah he had to perform a miracle. To let a unique she camel issue from the mountains. Allah granted Salih this miracle and a huge, unique, she camel appeared from the direction of the mountain. The Quranic commentators said that the people of Thamud gathered on a certain day at their meeting place, and the prophet Salih (PBUH) came and addressed them to believe in Allah, reminding them of the favors Allah had granted them.

Prophet Saleh was sent to warn the people of Thamud, that God was not pleased with their behaviour, and would rain down destruction upon them, if they did not mend their evil ways.

These qualities are not only portrayed in Prophet Salih (A.S) but every other prophet too.
