Types of Characters

Protagonist VS Antagonist

Protagonists

  • The protagonist is the main character in a story, novel, drama, or other literary work
  • The character that the reader or audience empathizes with
  • The antagonist opposes the protagonist.

This boils down to:

bad guy vs. good guy

Luke Skywalker versus Darth Vadar

***it may not always be as obvious (indirect)

Also Known As: hero, main Character

Antagonist

  • The antagonist in a work of fiction is the character who opposes the hero, or protagonist
  • The antagonist, when there is one, helps to provide the story's conflict
  • The antagonist is not always so clear
  • Does his role change during the novel?

Also Known As: villain, bad guy, archenemy, nemesis

Protagonist vs Antagonist

Whats the Best way to revise the Following Sentence?:

Some apples are red some apples are green.

A good writer or narrator uses plot elements to tell a complete story, and a good reader will use these elements to retell the story to others.

Direct vs Indirect characterization

The story will tell you what type of character; the writer makes direct statements about a character's personality and tells what the character is like. ~ Direct

It is unclear what the character traits are; The writer reveals information about a character and his personality through that character's thoughts, words, and actions, along with how other characters respond to that character, including what they think and say about him.~ Indirect

a. Some apples are red, some apples are green.

b. Some apples are red, and, some apples are green.

c. Some apples are red, and some apples are green.

d. Some apples are red and green.
