Check your understanding Q 1-3
Try This: Identify the best living conditions.
Plants and animals require the following to survive:
Sunlight: Provides heat for both plant and animals. Needed for photosynthesis.
Food: Plants can use sunlight to produce their own food through photosynthesis. Animals need to eat plants or other animals for energy
Air: Plant photosynthesis requires carbon dioxide from the air, and animals require oxygen from the air.
Water: The bulk of animal and plant bodies are made up of water. Water is required in both plant and animal bodies for essential functions.
Example: Transport of nutrients.
Shelter: Either found naturally in their environment or built.
Example: Beaver Dam
Habitat
Water
As all organisms require water for survival, the quantity and type (salt or fresh) of water in an ecosystem determines which species can survive.
What organisms require salt water? fresh water?
Name certain species that can exist for long periods of time without water.
Would you expect to see a population of fish inhabiting the forest, or a frog in the desert?
Why or why not?
