Careers for the ISTJ

1. Business Manager - ISTJs tend to have a strong work ethic. They are hard-working and determined, and are therefore likely to succeed in the business world. Gene was a very good student, and he worked hard in school. His determination as well as his logical mind would help him to effectively manage a business.

2. Detective- ISTJs seem to be very observant. They remember facts very well, and would therefore prove useful while working a case. Gene described the settings of the book in great detail. He would probably be able to pick up on useful clues as a detective. Also, he has a very practical mind that would help him logically sort through evidence.

3. Accountant- ISTJs have a very logical and intellectual mind. They are generally better at mathematics rather than art. Gene was a devoted intellectual who would probably strive in such an academic environment. He would be better suited to the quiet office of an accountant, rather than a more lively and energetic workplace.

Summary of an ISTJ

ISTJ Strengths and Weaknesses

ISTJ's are known as the "Duty Fulfillers." The "I" stands for Introverted. The ISTJ's are introverted because they tend to be quiet and reserved individuals. The "S" stands for Sensing. The ISTJ's make decisions based on what they observe through their five senses, rather than their intuition. They are very logical and rational. The "T" stands for Thinking. This personality type is very thoughtful and reserved. They use their head opposed to their heart. The last letter "J" stands for Judging. This doesn't mean that they tend to judge people, but rather that they prefer to stay on task. They usually don't procrastinate with their work as they are usually on a tight schedule. They are uncomfortable when things are not planned out.

Strengths

1. Tend to be very observant and good with facts- they tend to have a good memory

2. Responsible, Hardworking- they work hard to fulfill tasks

3. Calm and Practical- they rarely lose their temper

4. Honest and Direct- very truthful with others

Weaknesses

1. Stubborn- usually doesn't like to accept change

2. Can be insensitive as they use logic over emotions

3. Always by the book- tends to follow guidelines that are set for them

4. May often unreasonably blame themselves- they tend to overload themselves with responsibility and then blame themselves if they fail

How These Traits Relate to Gene

Gene was very insecure throughout the novel. Perhaps if Gene had recognized the strengths within his personality, he may have been less resentful towards Finny. He was constantly comparing himself to Finny, and he criticized himself for not being as outgoing and athletic. If he had recognized his own strengths, such as his work ethic, he may have been able to overcome his jealousy.

Also, it may have helped if Gene had recognized his flaws. One of the ISTJ's flaws is that they tend to unnecessarily blame themselves. Gene may have felt overly guilty for the roll he played in Finny's fall. He let the guilt consume him after the fall. Had he been able to recognize his flaws, he may have realized that his guilt was being too destructive to his life.
