3 Simple Guidelines

What would academic ethics look like?

Ethics:

  • “a system of moral principles”

  • “that branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions.”

PERSONAL

So, what’s the difference? Both deal with what is right and wrong.

Essentially, morals are your individual compass, and ethics make up a larger framework shared within a community. For example, you might have business ethics, medical ethics, and academic ethics.

How do you judge the ethics of a situation?

CULTURAL

O

U

Utilitarian considerations – what are the positive and negative consequences of the actions in question for the greater social good?

Conclusion

Obligations – what obligations does the acting party have to others?

What does it take to be an ethical human being?

I

Ideals – how do the actions/policies measure up to your ideals about what someone with good character does?

  • In groups of 3-4, consider what it takes to be an ethical person. Take a giant sticky note and draw an ethical human being.

Consider the following...

What does he do for a living? How does he dress? Who are his friends? What does he do for fun? What does he say?

Imagine there’s a man just home from war. He’s made a career of protecting and serving his country. He comes home triumphantly. He’s brought with him a few prisoners of war, including the leader of the country he defeated and her son. His people call for blood; they want the death of the leader’s son to make amends for all of the deaths their country has suffered. He kills the man.

Pause. What is the difference between ethics & morals?
