during the 1500-1700 (16th &18th centuries)

Major characteristics of this time period include the movement of art and culture

Type of:

literature- Plays featuring mystery, morality and short plays called Soties which are sarcastic and comedic

playwright- were created by many talented writers with great messages to be remembered

performers- were as they need to be today, they were strong, confident, and expressive

music- that was used is especially was called Chanson. A chanson is generally a lyrical french song that is polyphonic and secular, loved all over Europe in this time period.

costumes- were a peculiar sight as the women wore dresses with plunging waistlines, hoop skirts, puffy tight sleeves, and flats. (upperclass women wore heels)

Men wore balloon sleeved shirts, doublets(button up coats), hoses(tights), and ruff collars.

Certain actors, costumes, scenery were used because at this time it was the style of modesty and status among the community.

Theatre of the renaissance times in France evolved because more technology was developed allowing them to move forward to greater quality of theatre.

Where: It is said that they first started setting up performance theaters in tennis courts but have evolved into building a separate building specialized for performances for better quality such as the Les Conferes de la Passion.

When: Performances were held during the day due to low quality lighting outdoors.

Performances were created for self expression, religious teachings, to send out a message and for entertainment purposes.

Theatre had started in the french renaissance because the royal families payed the funds to allow the people to entertain them.

Some famous people of theatre in this time include:

Jean Baptiste Poquelin- or better known as Moliere. He was the greatest known comic playwrighter of 1622-1673. He has organized the Theatre Illustre at the age of 21 and has written over 10 plays.

Thomas Corneille- is the younger brother of the famous Pierre Corneille. Thomas is a french dramatist of 1656-1678 who has written at least 16 tragedies including Ariane (1672) and The Labyrinth (1795)

Jean Baptiste-Racine- or also better known as Jean Racine. He was a french dramatic poet and historiographer of 1664-1691. Jean Racine was especially renown for his mysterious french plays of tragedy such as Andromaque (1667)
