Ice Wedging

Hi! My name is Timmy. I am a rock. I started out on top of a mountain. I was born with a condition, you see, the rock doctors call it being permeable. This means, I have tiny air pockets in my rock body which allows water or other substances to slip through. One night, water slipped through the tiny air pockets located inside my body due to my condition. Then the water froze and expanded. it split me in half and I rolled down the mountain losing chunks of my body as I fell. The outside layer of my shell was really jagged now and I was significantly smaller.

Hail

A couple days later, it hailed. Giant hail the size of a golf ball. In rock school, I learned that hail is a type of mechanical weathering. The hail broke off the jagged edges of my outer layer.

Animal Actions

A little while after the hail, a horse came by and pushed me to this hill where I rolled down to the river bank on a nice sandy beach. The fast current of the water tore away pieces of my outside layer. Now I am rough and jagged again.

Timmy's life story

Erosion

I fell into the river the other day. I was swept up by the current. The rough and jagged edges that were once there are gone. I am also a lot smaller. This is the process of erosion. I learned about it in rock school. I am being broken down by natural forces such as water.

More Animal Actions

When a family visited the beach, a kid dug me up. He tossed me aside and a bird picked me up and put me in its nest. Later I fell out of the nest and landed 10 ft below onto a layer of litter.

Deposition

Acid Rain

In rock school I also learned, after erosion comes deposition. I was deposed of on a new river bank. Soon after my deposition. I sank into the sand. All the particles of sand rubbed against me and started to break me down. In school i learned this was the process of abrasion.

After I fell out of the nest , it rained. the water washed me down to another beach where this time I was a little bigger than the other rocks who were on the beach but, acid rain, rain that is mixed with pollution from fossil fuels causing it to be acidic, wore me down fast due to the hot and humid climate. Acid rain is a form of chemical weathering. I felt happy that now I fit in somewhere. This story brings me to my present day conditions. I am smooth but very small. Now, I am just a grain of sand.
